It is with great apprehension, and after a great deal of thought about what is best for the future of Gamer's Guide to Life and the experience of the most important people in our journalistic lives (our lovely readers) that I am about to deliver some rather important news. I do urge you to read on, and I promise faithfully that everything upcoming is for the good of the site.
Now, I don't want you to think that, from that ominous first paragraph, Gamer's Guide to Life is closing its doors, shutting the Venetian blinds and packing up its boxes - because it most certainly isn't. We just feel that Gamer's Guide to Life needs a repaint, a real change round in system and a fresh and creative staffing team, and as such we're going to have to close our doors for just a little while.
So, to the changes that'll be happening. Well, first and foremost, our Managing Editor and site owner, Mr. Matthew Meadows, has left us for a little while due to commitments at university. However, never fear - I am assured that he will be back and taking his managing role again come spring/summer 2010, and says that he'll try to contribute what he can, when he can, but can't promise anything.
Another big change which will be coming over our time away will be a complete restructure, and a fresh face, to our team. You'll still notice some old faces when (we hope) you return to Gamer's Guide to Life once we're back, but we'll have some new writers and editors, and a different team structure which we hope will make the world of difference to the blog, providing our readers with the most comprehensive, dedicated, reliable and unbiased gaming journalism in the business. Or, at least, that's the aim.
And the final change will be Gamer's Guide to Life's entirely new look and feel. We'll be making some major design improvements to the site, and we aim to make it easier, quicker and nicer for you to look round. We'll still be retaining some elements which you'll be familiar with, but the revamp has been long-needed and will definitely take Gamer's Guide to Life into a new era.
We certainly hope you'll stay with us, even though we won't be posting, and be sure to check the site out once we're back and better than ever. We'll be sure to update you on progress on our Twitter account, and we'll be looking for site beta testers in the near future, so be sure to check the blog in order to register your interest. We'll let you know via Twitter, here and email (if you sign up via the sidebar) when the new site is up and ready.
To use a long-legendary gaming cliché - a new era is coming. We'll leave you now in the hope that you're in good health, and will have a very happy advent and Christmas. Gamer's Guide to Life will be back in late December 2009, or the New Year.

The main talking point has been the newly added "King of the Hill" mode - KOTH. In KOTH, players find themselves on almost symmetrical maps fighting to hold a single control point. It's basically Arena mode with respawns. All the fragging takes place around the single control point, with the occasional push forward for some old fashioned spawn camping when one team has the advantage. It does however get a little too hectic, as in larger servers where up to 32 players fight simultaneously it can be hard to employ any sort of tactics or gameplan. There also seems to be a large issue with frame rate problems present in this mode, as 6 or 7 heavies accompanied by 8 spraying pyros in a 10m square will take its toll on even the most high end of systems. It seems to me that this mode would be better suited to arena sized servers, usually 20 plays max. The accompanying new map for this mode, Viaduct, is the first official map (as clearly pointed out by the Valve blog) to include snow. Its a welcomed visual change but again it's hard on the machine. The other KOTH maps are mere rehashes of previous Arena maps.
The update also threw in three new non KOTH maps. The first of which is CP_Yukon. In an attempt to cater for the competitive TF2 scene valve have responded by including Yukon, previously only available as a downloadable custom community map. It's well made and visually sound, with plenty of alternate paths to flank. Like most 5cp maps it favours smaller teams rather than larger which tend to get caught up in a stalemate. The next is CTF_Sawmill - again, Valve have copied and pasted Sawmill into a new game mode. However, different from KOTH_Sawmill, the ctf version features some slight changes, such as an additional underground area for the intel. It is however another map that makes your PC work its ass off. The last new map is Arena Offblast, a nice little map that features a dangerous cliff and an indoor area. Standard arena style, but it is a little easy to get caught up in trying to knock opponents off the edge rather than kill them the old fashioned way, a rocket to the face.
New content aside, Valve have made lots of subtle changes too. The Force-A-Nature has been made less powerful, the sandman has a few changes and best of all the losing team now have new 3rd person fleeing and cowering animations which you just need to see for yourself.
I have yet to unlock any of the old hats from the random drop system, and unsuprisingly I have yet to unlock any of the new additions, but I'll just have to keep my eye out for players sporting them on the battlefield. To be honest I was expecting more from the update, but let's just hope this update was an attempt to hold us over that little bit longer until the rumoured Soldier Update is released. Knowing Valve, the next update should hit before Christmas 2010.

Two map packs just doesn't seem to be enough for you Killzone 2 fans. As such, Guerilla has deemed it neccessary to put into effect Plan C, the release of yet another Killzone 2 map pack, this time named Napalm and Cordite. Details on the upcoming pack are sketchy to say the least, but Guerilla Games' producer, Seb Downie writes, "It has flames and bolts [and] will fulfill the wishes of many of our weirdest fans." No release date, as yet, though we do know the names of two of the upcoming new maps: “Suljeva Cliffside” and “Arctower Landing”.However, the new map pack's secretive nature can be forgiven, as the Killzone dev has just announced - and extensively detailed - the upcoming downloadable patch for the game, the catchily named '1.28'. Amongst the new features contained in the new patch are the flamethrower and bolt gun (personal favourites of mine...), the ability for moderators to create 'double-points' events and some 'exploit' fixes which prevents unscrupulous players from using glitches to their own advantage. You can view the full update list below.

Home Community Manager over on the EU PlayStation Forums, Mr. TedTheDog, has been keeping us regularly updated on developments in the EU version of Sony's online estate, PlayStation Home. The latest of these updates comes in the form of a rather lengthy list of upcoming changes to Home, which might well have you loading up Home for once in a while to take a look.
The updates will be making their way into Home over the next few months. You can read through Ted's bulletins by clicking here and here.
I hope that these updates will do the European version of Home the justice that it should have had in the first place, and attract back gamers like me who gave up on it due to the lack of content.

It’s been a long time coming, and now it’s here. The new PlayStation 3 firmware, version 2.70. It’s been ages since there’s been a firmware update which can be described as landmark, and Sony know that – so is the latest update going to be enough to satisfy your cravings?
The simple answer: I highly doubt it. However, that isn’t to say it’s a completely pointless update – it’s brought some clever little options and some really nice new features with it; I just doubt it’s enough to class it as a milestone for PS3.

So, new features. There isn’t a huge amount this time, but they’re done relatively okay and integrated well into the existing system. However, they aren’t going to revolutionise the way you use your PS3 – far from it – but they are going to make the experience that bit easier and just a tad high-tech.
The biggest addition to the system is the new ‘text chat’ feature. Allowing up to 16 people to chat using a controller or keyboard, the new text chat feature is, essentialy, the MSN of PlayStation 3. It works in the same way as MSN – you type your message in the input box, hit send and it appears in a reading pane above for you and your friends to read. If you’re in a game, new messages in the chat room appear as message alerts in the top right-hand corner of the screen. You can even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

However, there is one big weakness to the feature. If you’re halfway through a game and get a message, you have to access the in-game XMB and go into the chat room to type a message. This lengthy and clunky process can be frustrating if you’re in the middle of an attack online, and could cost you precious online XP if you miss something while typing a message. A Home-esque message box and input system would work much better; if you could type a message using a keyboard whilst in-game, the system would be much more fluid to use.
The dynamic normaliser for music is pretty useless, if I’m honest; it prevents sudden volume jumps when you’re listening to music. However, if you’ve bought an album, all the tracks should already be of a similar volume anyway, so really there’s no real scope for the future. However, if you’re someone who uses ‘free’ download websites to get your music, you may find yourself using this feature out of pure necessity.
Use of internet on the PS3 has been improved, giving much more flexibility to the user. By highlighting a game disk and going into the ‘triangle’ options menu, a new feature called ‘Internet Search’ will allow you to immediately search for that game via the PS3’s inbuilt search function. Good if you’re looking for news on that game, bad if you already know or you like playing your games and not researching them. Furthermore, Sony have added language fixes to the browser, meaning that Polish, Greek, Czech, Slovak, and Turkish languages now have the full sets of characters required for reading foreign-language sites on the PS3’s internet browser. You can also copy and paste text now, but it’s slow and taxing on the system. Both features are done well, but seem more like additional features than actual firmware features.

The best of the features has to be the new text-chat function – if you don’t want to talk over camera or headset, or you have friends who don’t own a headset, you’ll find yourself using the text-chat function more and more regularly. Whether it be for organising games, fighting talk or just general chit-chat, this’ll be one feature which will probably be used more than all of the others put together.
Overall, however, you won’t find yourself gaping in awe at the new firmware.

I'm gonna put this ever so bluntly. We're getting very, very close to a Open Beta release of the hotly anticipated PlayStation Home. How close, you ask?
The 11th December, 2008. Or, in other words, tomorrow.
Hate to say I told you so, but... well- I told you so.
A beta impressions post from my experiences in the closed beta will come as soon as I know I'm not breaking any terms by writing about it, and a full review of Home will come soon after Open Beta release.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Home, and be sure to keep an eye on GGTL for anything Home related.

Don't tell me. You've been sitting at that computer all day, feverishly checking your email inbox every few minutes, whilst rocking forwards and backwards muttering under your breath. It's understandable, in the current Home climate. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're gonna have to wait a bit longer.TedTheDog, SCEE Home Community Manager, has given us another quick update about what's happening on the Home front (eh, see what I did there?) via the Official EU PlayStation Forums.
Ted informs us that SCEE are busy at work identifying those unfortunate PlayStationers who did not recieve the beta key which should have been sent to them, and are adding them to the list of people due to be sent a key in the next batch later this week. No emails will be sent today, Ted mentions, so you may as well shut down Hotmail now. If the email problem is fixed by tomorrow morning, beta emails might be sent out tomorrow, but if not all the emails will go out on Thursday.
To sign off, I can only say on Sony's and TedTheDog's behalf, sorry for the delay.

Many PS3 gamers waiting in anticipation for their closed beta key wil be disappointed, as they have been delayed again, according to Home Community Manager on the EU PlayStation Forums, TedTheDog.External problems due to issues with SCEE's email systems have caused the beta keys, which were due to be sent last Friday, being prevented from being distributed.
Just over 20,000 Beta key emails managed to make their way through the email chaos to reach their lucky recipients, many of who have downloaded the Home Beta and are enjoying it at the current time.
TedTheDog ensures the PlayStation community that SCEE intend to resend all the beta emails they think didn't get through as soon as they can, and also attempt to send a larger batch on Thursday (27th November). However, the email problem needs to be dealt with first. Ted also tells us that SCEE are working on the email blockage, but it's a pretty slow process, so it is safe to say that no emails will leave Home HQ today.
For those interested, the first batch of beta emails were targetted at a certain percentage of people who downloaded something from the PlayStation Store, and has nothing to do with the number of posts on the EU PlayStation Forums, as some thought. The next batch will be making their way to active PSN users who have logged into an SCEE hosted game in the last couple of months. Although some will not get a beta key, those who don't can be assured that the Open Beta will hit the Store before Christmas.

PS. The firewall which was put on Home to prevent gamesharing has been removed, thus making Home act like many other PSN games in the fact that it can be shared. However, TedTheDog and SCE encourage users to keep their PSN ID, password and other confidential information private and to avoid gamesharing at all costs. Please be sensible and keep your PSN login information private.

TedTheDog, everyone's favourite Home Community Manager, has updated the awaiting millions on the progress of Home as the open beta comes closer. Here's what Ted posted on the forums. So, hopefully an Open Beta release is going to grace our PS3's before Christmas. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.Heres a rough overview of the coming weeks:
- The version 1.0 Patch Notes will be published in the closed beta forum so they know what to expect and to help plan testing.
- A couple of days later Version 1.0 will be released into the Closed beta. That will not happen this week.
- SCEE will be inviting a large number of extra testers into the closed beta to load test and that process will start within a day or so of v1.0 going live. We wont invite them all straight away, we'll ramp it up over a a period of time. We will be inviting non-English speaking testers for the first time. Languages covered will be English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. Please remember these are languages, not countries, so more than the immediately obvious countries will be included to a degree. The lists have been chosen already, dont try changing your language to get included!
- Once we start inviting people in to the Closed Beta the public SCEE Home forums will become the Home beta test forums.
- The date of Open Beta start will be announced in advance.
- Open Beta starts and that will be just as it implies, Open to all.

LGF '08 continues on it's massive journey through London, getting more successful as it goes on. As ever, I'm reporting for GGTL with the latest from the festival.31st October - 2nd November hailed the arrival of the Xbox street team as they requisitioned Leicester Square for gaming purposes. New games Lips, You're In The Movies, Scene It? Box Office Smash, 007: Quantum of Solace and the latest in the ever popular Lego series, Lego Batman, were available to play at the event.
1st November saw IGN's Transatlantic Challenge fought out at EA's 'Be The One' event in Trafalgar Square. Both the UK competitor, Chris Bullard, and his American rival, Ryan Glick, fought bravely; Bullard won the first round in the FIFA match, with Bullard soon pulling back with a fantastic performance on Madden. The competition was won by Glick in a fierce game of Tiger Woods '09.
1st November also saw the University of London taken over for the 'Games That Make A Difference' event, a lecture on games which make a difference or contribute to various aspects of society.
2nd November had to mean The Pro Evo Playoff at The Leigon in Old Street. This unofficial, fan-run event pitted competitors wits against each other in Konami's football favourite. The event was also the venue of a live DJ, and so made the night as fun as it was fast-paced.
7th November will play host to 'Who Wants To Be...' at the Unicorn Theatre. The event is a spontaneous, democratic game show where each member of the audience pay a tenner to get in. All the money is then pooled together, and the audience have to raise ideas about how they want to use the money. Previously, an audience of 1000 suggested that they sack the host and put the cash behind the theatre bar, collective ownership of a dog, guerilla gardening and actually burning the cash there and then. This time, double the audience means double the cash, so £2000 for an audience of 2000 to play God with. Sounds interesting.
12th November sees Cybersonica Social: The Sound of Games. Each month investigates a different strand of work associated with Cybersonica with line-ups to suit. The Sound of Games features live music performances as well as showings of short films and audiovisual performances.

The London Games Festival 2008 got off to a great start in Trafalgar Square on the 24th, and looks set to get even better as the action continues. Here's all the latest from the festival.October 24th was the date of the much loved Video Games Live show. The show took gamers at London's Royal Festival Hall through an orchestral voyage through some of the very best soundtracks and theme music ever to have graced the face of gaming.
October 25-26th saw the Movie Comic Media Expo take control of the Docklands Excel Centre. The event allowed fans to get to grips with the best from the comic-games genre, with favourites such as Streetfighter IV, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. The event also played host to an attempt to break the record for the largest number of gaming cosplayers in one place.
October 31-Nov 1st sees EA fly headfirst into their proceedings in Trafalgar Square for their Be The One event. The event will play host to unveilings of anticipated titles such as Mirror's Edge, and also IGN's Transatlantic Challenge, which will pit gamers from the UK and from across the pond against each other. A whole bagful of bands will be taking the stage to rock out the festival during the course of the event.
Sounds like a pretty cool lineup. I'll keep you posted on the latest from the festival as more happens.
