News: Upcoming changes to EU PlayStation Home
by Linford Butler
16.5.09
Home Community Manager over on the EU PlayStation Forums, Mr. TedTheDog, has been keeping us regularly updated on developments in the EU version of Sony's online estate, PlayStation Home.

The latest of these updates comes in the form of a rather lengthy list of upcoming changes to Home, which might well have you loading up Home for once in a while to take a look.

The updates will be making their way into Home over the next few months. You can read through Ted's bulletins by clicking here and here.

I hope that these updates will do the European version of Home the justice that it should have had in the first place, and attract back gamers like me who gave up on it due to the lack of content.

Home Update: Open Beta dated, and you're gonna like this...
by Linford Butler
10.12.08
I'm gonna put this ever so bluntly. We're getting very, very close to a Open Beta release of the hotly anticipated PlayStation Home.

How close, you ask?

The 11th December, 2008. Or, in other words, tomorrow.

Hate to say I told you so, but... well- I told you so.

A beta impressions post from my experiences in the closed beta will come as soon as I know I'm not breaking any terms by writing about it, and a full review of Home will come soon after Open Beta release.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Home, and be sure to keep an eye on GGTL for anything Home related.

Home Update: Closed Beta Code Latest
by Linford Butler
25.11.08
Don't tell me. You've been sitting at that computer all day, feverishly checking your email inbox every few minutes, whilst rocking forwards and backwards muttering under your breath. It's understandable, in the current Home climate. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're gonna have to wait a bit longer.

TedTheDog, SCEE Home Community Manager, has given us another quick update about what's happening on the Home front (eh, see what I did there?) via the Official EU PlayStation Forums.

Ted informs us that SCEE are busy at work identifying those unfortunate PlayStationers who did not recieve the beta key which should have been sent to them, and are adding them to the list of people due to be sent a key in the next batch later this week. No emails will be sent today, Ted mentions, so you may as well shut down Hotmail now. If the email problem is fixed by tomorrow morning, beta emails might be sent out tomorrow, but if not all the emails will go out on Thursday.

To sign off, I can only say on Sony's and TedTheDog's behalf, sorry for the delay.

Home Update: Closed Beta Codes Delayed
by GGTL Newsteam
24.11.08
Many PS3 gamers waiting in anticipation for their closed beta key wil be disappointed, as they have been delayed again, according to Home Community Manager on the EU PlayStation Forums, TedTheDog.

External problems due to issues with SCEE's email systems have caused the beta keys, which were due to be sent last Friday, being prevented from being distributed.

Just over 20,000 Beta key emails managed to make their way through the email chaos to reach their lucky recipients, many of who have downloaded the Home Beta and are enjoying it at the current time.

TedTheDog ensures the PlayStation community that SCEE intend to resend all the beta emails they think didn't get through as soon as they can, and also attempt to send a larger batch on Thursday (27th November). However, the email problem needs to be dealt with first. Ted also tells us that SCEE are working on the email blockage, but it's a pretty slow process, so it is safe to say that no emails will leave Home HQ today.

For those interested, the first batch of beta emails were targetted at a certain percentage of people who downloaded something from the PlayStation Store, and has nothing to do with the number of posts on the EU PlayStation Forums, as some thought. The next batch will be making their way to active PSN users who have logged into an SCEE hosted game in the last couple of months. Although some will not get a beta key, those who don't can be assured that the Open Beta will hit the Store before Christmas.

PS. The firewall which was put on Home to prevent gamesharing has been removed, thus making Home act like many other PSN games in the fact that it can be shared. However, TedTheDog and SCE encourage users to keep their PSN ID, password and other confidential information private and to avoid gamesharing at all costs. Please be sensible and keep your PSN login information private.

Home Update
by Linford Butler
15.11.08
TedTheDog, everyone's favourite Home Community Manager, has updated the awaiting millions on the progress of Home as the open beta comes closer. Here's what Ted posted on the forums.

Heres a rough overview of the coming weeks:

  1. The version 1.0 Patch Notes will be published in the closed beta forum so they know what to expect and to help plan testing.
  2. A couple of days later Version 1.0 will be released into the Closed beta. That will not happen this week.
  3. SCEE will be inviting a large number of extra testers into the closed beta to load test and that process will start within a day or so of v1.0 going live. We wont invite them all straight away, we'll ramp it up over a a period of time. We will be inviting non-English speaking testers for the first time. Languages covered will be English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. Please remember these are languages, not countries, so more than the immediately obvious countries will be included to a degree. The lists have been chosen already, dont try changing your language to get included!
  4. Once we start inviting people in to the Closed Beta the public SCEE Home forums will become the Home beta test forums.
  5. The date of Open Beta start will be announced in advance.
  6. Open Beta starts and that will be just as it implies, Open to all.

So, hopefully an Open Beta release is going to grace our PS3's before Christmas. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Writer's Note: Fighting on the Home front
by Linford Butler
9.7.08
It's been a little quiet on the Home front recently, but PSN director Eric Lempel has recently confirmed that the autumn release will be a fully-fledged service, rather than a work-in-progress.

During the last week's mishaps concerning the 2.40 update - which Sony's software engineers have ironed out with a smaller update - Lempel has claimed that Sony's social gaming experience, Home, is on track and will be non-beta when released later this year.

This contradics PSN's Susan Panico, who stated in a previous interview that Home's release would be managed along the same lines as Google's GMail service, where an open beta service is provided and refined over time. However, speaking to games site Next-Gen, Lempel said that this 'slow-release' may not be the case.

“The Home open beta is still on schedule for release later this fall," Lempel stated. "If you think about Gmail and Susan’s reference, Gmail when it launched in beta was afully functional email service. I personally was using it and it offered everything you’d expect, but was in beta just to say that there’s more to come and maybe it’s not fully polished.

“The reason we’ve been delaying Home is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it won’t be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.”

Lempel also spoke of Sony's planned movie-on-demand service, saying: “I don’t have any more specifics right now, but it will go live in the US this summer and I think it will offer consumers everything they’re looking for from us. It will offer everything they expect from us and probably a little bit more.”

This latest news seems promising, but after previous delays I won't hold my breath. More information on Home it comes.
