Playing this game has proven one thing to me: whilst explosions and tanks are all well and good, games only utilising these assets and nothing else fail to offer anything more than a shallow experience.
So why am I so down on Mercenaries 2? Well let me tell you why; lost potential. This game could have been so much better. Just look at the concept: nukes, tanks, a Swedish hard-man, a politically relevant storyline and pedigree after a fun prequel. This game should be nothing less than amazing; but it isn’t, and that’s what hurts the most.

It’s only while driving around in the excellently kitted out vehicles, after just starting a mission - that you can start to see the game come apart at the seams. Your mission normally consists of going to a generic VZ (Venezuelan army) base with allied troops to back you up. Sounds good; but on the journey you’ll hear your partners repeatedly say the same things over and over again (examples being “Hey it’s the Merc…Hey its Mattias…Fricking’ VZs runnin’ amuck”). So the TV gets muted after the hundredth statement about my character’s arrival, no big deal – it’ll still be fun right – well no. No it won’t. You will immediately be blown up by the incredibly overpowered tanks, somehow live, run behind a wall (there’s loads of walls), wait until you get your health back, call in an airstrike you won’t be able to see the effects of (you’ll be hiding), call in re-enforcements and win. It’s okay the first 3 or 4 times, but after the 25th time, it’s not cool.
But let’s look at some positives. The game does have a really enjoyable plot. You can truly start to see the conflict in Venezuela escalate from a local oil war, to an international crisis. The realistic storyline – however is marred by stereotyped characters – the drunk Russian pilot, the cheeky Irish chopper captain, the spunky Latina mechanic, the horribly voiced Rasta pirates – it’s all too cheesy to take seriously.

So overall, this game does do a few things well. An interesting plot, a good concept, some pretty explosions and nice equipment are all present, but the game is so badly weighed down by glitches, bad voice acting, PS2 graphics and poor shooting gameplay that I can’t recommend that you buy it. However, for those truly in need of some explosive action, I can recommend a rental.
4.5/10
